How to Change Quotation Mark Styles in MS Word


Word97, Word2000 or WordXP Instructions
1. Open a new text document or the document you are working on. If you are using an older version of MS Word such as Word97, Word2000 or WordXP, click on the “Tools” menu.
2. Click on “AutoCorrect.”
3. Click on “AutoFormat As You Type” in the AutoCorrect menu.
4. Deselect the “Smart Quotes” option and select the "Straight Quotes" option in the ticker boxes.
5. Click on “Okay” at the bottom of the text box.
Newer Versions of MS Word Instructions
6. Open a new text document or the document you are working on. If you’re using a newer version of MS Word, click on the “Office Button” at the top left-hand corner.
7. Click on “Word Options” at the bottom of the Office Button drop-down menu.
8. Click on the “Proofreading” tab and click on the “AutoCorrect Options” button.
9. Click on the “AutoFormat as You Type” tab and deselect the “Smart Quotes with Straight Quotes” option under “Replace as You Type.”
10. Click “Okay” at the bottom of the box to save your selection.
