How to Show the Hidden Codes in a Word Document
1. Press 'Alt + F9' to show all field codes. Work displays field codes between curly brackets like this: { FIELD NAME [Properties] [Optional switches] }. The 'FIELD NAME' is the name of the field. The 'Properties' are any instructions or parameters for the field. Not all fields have properties and the properties for some fields are optional. The 'Optional switches' are settings for the field such as formatting.
2. Press 'Alt + F9' again to hide the field codes.
3. Click an individual field code. Press 'Shift + F9' to show or hide the corresponding field code.
4. Click 'File,' 'Options' to have Word always show field codes instead of their values or to display shading for hidden field codes. Word displays the 'Word Options' dialog box. Click 'Advanced.' Scroll down to the 'Show document content' section and either select the 'Show field codes instead of their values' check box or adjust the 'Field shading' settings.
