How to Create an Editable Form in Microsoft Word 2007
1. Click the 'Office' button, then click 'New' and 'Create' to make Word create a new document where you will make an editable form.
2. Click the 'Office' button again, then click the 'Options' button. Click the 'Show developer' check box to display the tab for creating forms. Click the 'Developer' tab that appears.
3. Click the boldfaced 'AA' icon in the 'Controls' panel. Word inserts a Rich Text control into your document. Press 'Enter' a few times to move to a clear space for inserting another control.
4. Click the icon at the bottom left of the 'Control' panel to insert a drop-down list into your form, then click the 'Design mode' button on the toolbar. Right-click the Rich Text control you inserted in Step 3, then click 'Properties.'
5. Type a title for the control in the 'Title' text box. For example, if you want the form to be used for entering information about famous artists, you could type 'Artists.' Click the 'OK' button after entering the title.
6. Use the steps from the previous instruction to type a title for the drop-down list. For example, type 'A list of artists' in the 'Title' text box for this control.
7. Click the 'Add' button of the dialog box you opened in the previous step, then, in the 'Display' text box, type the name of an item you want to appear in the drop-down list -- for example, type 'Picasso.' Click 'OK' to insert the item in the list.
8. Repeat the previous step for each item you want in the list, then click 'OK' to close the 'Properties' dialog box. Click the 'Design mode' button to exit design mode and run your form.
9. Type some text in the Rich Text control, then click an item in the drop-down list. Click the 'Design mode' button again, then use Step 4's instruction's to display the 'Properties' dialog box for the Rich Text control.
10. Click the check box labeled 'Contents cannot be edited,' then click 'OK' to close the 'Properties' dialog box. This step shows you that you can edit the Rich Text control.
11. Use Step 4's instructions to open the 'Properties' dialog box for the drop-down list, then click the 'Choose an item' prompt from the box's lower pane.
12. Click the 'Modify' button, then type a new prompt appropriate to the list's contents. For example, type 'Choose a famous artist from the list.' This step shows that you can edit the drop-down list.
13. Click 'OK' to finalize your changes to the drop-down list, then run the form as you did in Step 8. Try to type something in the Rich Text control. Notice that you can't this time -- your Step 10 edit is the reason. Also, notice that the drop-down list is displaying the new prompt which you typed in Step 12.
