How to Format MS Word Without Large Spacing
1. Open up a Word document you've already formatted with large spacing but want to reduce the spacing, or open up a blank document on which you want to ensure smaller spacing. To open a new document, simply open Word by clicking 'Start/All Programs/Microsoft Office/Microsoft Word.' To open a previous document, find the document in question and double-click it.
2. Press the 'Ctrl' and 'A' keys on your keyboard simultaneously to highlight the entire document, or highlight the parts of the document on which you want to format the spacing by clicking your mouse and dragging it across that section of the article. (If working with a new document, skip this step.)
3. Click the 'Line and Paragraph Spacing' button within the 'Paragraph' section of the 'Home' tab at the top of the screen. (Word opens automatically to the 'Home' tab.) The 'Line and Paragraph Spacing' button contains four horizontal lines and an arrow pointing up and down to the left of the lines.
4. Select the spacing you prefer. Word offers a default spacing of 1.15---a little more than one space between lines. For larger spacing, select '2' (double space) or '3' (triple space); for smaller spacing, select '1' (single space).
5. Click 'Line Spacing Options,' and in the 'Spacing' section at the right, underneath the word 'At,' press the downward arrow to make the spacing smaller than 1. The smallest spacing Word allows is 0.5.
6. Click 'OK' to save the small spacing format, then click 'File/Save' or 'File/Save As' to save the document.
