How to Convert Microsoft Word 2003 to a PDF

Prepare to Export
1. Open the Microsoft Word 2003 document using Writer. Launch Writer. Click the 'File' menu, pull down to select 'Open' and browse for the Word document. Then click the 'Open' button. The document displays much as it does in Word.
2. Open the 'PDF Options' dialog box to select export options. From the 'File' menu, pull down to select 'Export as PDF.' The 'PDF Options' dialog box displays on the 'General' tab. There are four additional tabs: 'Initial View,' 'User Interface,' 'Links' and 'Security.' Each contains check boxes and radio buttons with which to make selections.
3. Click the export options you prefer on the 'General' tab then navigate to the other four tabs in sequence, and make selections on them, ending with the 'Security' tab.
4. Select password protection for the document, if desired. The 'Security' tab contains two command buttons: 'Set open password' that enables you to enter a password restricting who can open the document and 'Set permissions password' that enables you to restrict who can change the document and how. When clicked, both commands buttons open a dialog box that enables you to enter, confirm and save password protection. You return to the 'PDF Options' dialog box.
Export PDF
5. Select the folder in which you want to save the PDF file. Click 'Export' on the 'PDF Options' dialog box. When the 'Export' window displays, browse to and open the folder in which to save the file you are converting; but do not take any further action.
6. Name the PDF document. Since you opened the Word document in Writer as a new document, the document will not retain Word's name but will default to an 'Untitled' name. Change the part of the default name preceding the '.pdf' file extension to a name that accurately describes the document.
7. Click 'Export.' The document is converted to PDF format and saved in the folder you designated.
