How to Make a Picture in a Word Document Black White

1. Upload the picture into Word by clicking the 'Insert' tab and then choosing 'Picture.' Browse until you find the location of the picture (on your hard drive or flash drive, for example). Once you find the picture, click on it so the file name appears in the white box at the bottom of the 'Insert Picture' window, and then choose 'Insert.' The locations of the 'Insert' and 'Picture' tabs and buttons vary based on the version of Word you are using; if you can't find them, consult the help menu.
2. Resize the picture, if it isn't the size you want, before attempting to convert from color to black and white. Click on the outline of the picture and hold the shift key and the left mouse button to resize the picture. Drag the outlines of the box until you achieve the size you want. Holding down the shift key will allow the picture to resize proportionately. Another option for Office 2007 users is to highlight the picture, right click the mouse, choose 'Size' and then input the desired dimensions. For example, if your picture is currently 4 x 6, the size box will show a height of 4 inches and a width of 6. If you want to resize the picture to 2 x 3, input 2 in the height box and 3 in the width box.
3. Convert the picture to black and white in Office 2007 by first clicking on the picture. Then right-click the mouse, choose 'Format Picture' and then choose 'Recolor.' Word offers lets you choose black and white, sepia, grayscale or washout; in addition, you can change the variations of the photo. This means you can change the text, accent or background colors to make them lighter, darker or slightly different colors. In Word 2003 and 2007, choose the photo by right-clicking on it and then clicking 'Format Picture.' When the instruction box appears, choose 'Picture.' Under image selection, choose 'Color' and 'Black and White.' If that black and white image appears too harsh, you can also try grayscale.
4. Adjust the brightness and contrast of the photo after it has been converted to black and white. Choose the ''Brightness' or 'Contrast' options under 'Format Picture,' and drag the arrow to increase or decrease these options.
