How to Change the Footnote Separator in Word

1. Start Microsoft Word 2007 and open a document that contains a footnote for which you want to change the footnote separator.
2. Click the 'Draft View' button at the bottom right of the Word 2007 screen so you are in draft view.
3. Choose the 'References' tab at the top of the screen to display the References ribbon. Click the 'Show Notes' button at the bottom of the 'Footnotes' section of the 'References' ribbon to display the 'Footnotes' window at the bottom of the screen. If you see a dialog box called 'View Footnotes,' then choose 'View Footnote Area' and click the 'OK' button.
4. Select the 'Notes' drop-down list from the top of the Footnotes Window and choose 'Footnote separator' from the list of options. The current footnote separator will be displayed in the footnote.
5. Delete or change the footnote separator that is now displayed in the 'Footnotes' window using your keyboard.
6. Close the 'Footnotes' window when you are finished changing the footnotes separator.
