How to Put Numbers Vertically in Word Documents

Create a Numbered List
1. Click inside of the Word document where you want to put a vertical list of numbers.
2. Click the "Numbering" button on the "Standard" toolbar in Word 2003. In Word 2007 or Word 2010, go to the "Home" tab and click on "Numbering" in the "Paragraph" group. You can also press "Ctrl+Alt+L" to begin a numbered list. The number "1" will appear on the page.
3. Select the numbered list you started. Go to the "Format" menu in Word 2003 and click "Bullets and Numbering." Go to the "Numbered" tab and click "Customize." In Word 2007 or 2010, click the arrow next to the "Numbering" button and select "Define New Numbering Format."
4. Enter "1" with no decimal or parenthesis into the "Number Format" box. Enter "Right" into the "Alignment" box and click "OK" to create a vertical list of numbers with no punctuation that aligns by the right border of the numbers on the left border of the page.
5. Place your cursor after the number "1." Press the "Spacebar" and then press the "Enter" key to move to the next line and enter a "2." Repeat, adding as many numbers as you need.
Create a Numbered Table
6. Insert a table in your Word document. In Word 2003, go to the "Table" menu, point to "Insert" and select "Table." In Word 2007 or 2010, go to the "Insert" tab, click on "Table" and click "Insert Table." The "Insert Table" dialog box will open.
7. Enter "1" in the "Number of Columns" box. In the "Number of Rows" box, type the last number you want to put vertically onto the document. Change the "Fixed Column Width" box to "0.5" and click "OK."
8. Select the table with your mouse. Click the "Numbering" button on the "Standard" toolbar in Word 2003. In Word 2007 or Word 2010, go to the "Home" tab and click on "Numbering" in the "Paragraph" group.
9. Go to the "Format" menu in Word 2003 and click "Bullets and Numbering." Go to the "Numbered" tab and click "Customize." In Word 2007 or 2010, click the arrow next to the "Numbering" button and select "Define New Numbering Format." Enter "1" with no decimal or parenthesis into the "Number Format" box.
10. Right-click the table and select "Borders and Shading." On the "Borders" tab under "Setting," click "None" and then click "OK."
11. Click the "Center Alignment" button on the "Formatting" toolbar in Word 2003 or in the "Paragraph" group of the "Home" tab in Word 2007 or 2010 to center the vertical list of numbers on the page, or the "Right Alignment" button to put them on the right side of the page. You can also drag the table anywhere you want it on the document.
