How to Format Page Numbers in Word

1. Open Microsoft Word and then open an existing document to which you want to add and format page numbers or open a new blank Word document to which to add numbering.
2. Click 'Insert' on the toolbar and click on 'Page Numbers.' The 'Page Numbers' dialog box will open. Choose whether you want the number positioned at the top or bottom of the page and then choose if you want the numbers on the left side, right side, centered on the page or choose inside or outside if you are printing a document in book form; these last two will print all numbers toward the 'binding,' or close to the outer edge of every page.
3. Click the 'Format' button. The 'Page Number Format' dialog box will open. Choose from the number formatting options in the drop-down menu. You can also choose to include chapter numbers, continue numbering in a new section or choose to start at a different number. Click 'OK' to close the 'Page Format' dialog box and then click 'OK' again to close the 'Page Number' box.
4. Click 'View' on the toolbar and then click 'Header and Footer'. Click in the header or footer area where you want to place your numbers. Click the 'Insert Auto Text' button on the 'Header and Footer' toolbar and then click 'Page X of Y' to format your numbers with the current page number and the total number of pages.
5. Select the page number, right-click and choose 'Font'. In the 'Font' dialog box, you can format the font style, size, color and any other effects you would like to apply to your numbering.
