How to Color the Background in Microsoft Word to Only One Page
Add a Color Background to Paragraphs
1. Open the document and scroll to the page that you want to color.
2. Click the 'Page Layout' tab on the Ribbon.
3. Check the end of the page to make sure the last paragraph ends on that page, rather than spilling over onto the next page. If a paragraph is separated by a page break, then move that paragraph onto the next page: Click at the end of the previous paragraph, then click the 'Breaks' button in the Ribbon; in the drop-down menu, click 'Page.'
4. Click at the beginning of the page you want to color, hold down the mouse button and drag to the end of the page to select all the text or content on the page.
5. Click the 'Home' tab on the Ribbon.
6. Click the arrow next to the 'Shading' icon on the Ribbon, in the Paragraph group; the icon displays a paint can. On the drop-down menu, click the color you want.
Add a Picture Watermark
7. Open the document and scroll to the page that you want to color.
8. Click at the top of the page you want to color.
9. Click the 'Page Layout' tab on the Ribbon, then click the button labeled 'Breaks.' On the drop-down menu, click 'Continuous.'
10. Click at the very beginning of the following page. On the Ribbon, click 'Breaks' again, and again select 'Continuous.'
11. Double-click in the top margin -- the blank space at the top of the page -- on the page you want to color. This opens the Header & Footer Tools tab on the Ribbon.
12. Click the 'Link to Previous' button on the Ribbon, if it is colored orange. If you want the color the very first page in a document, then the words 'Link to Previous' will appear gray; in that case, skip this step and move on to the next.
13. Scroll down to the next page, and click in the top margin of that page. Because you have already opened the header and footer options, you don't need to double-click.
14. Click the 'Link to Previous' button on the Ribbon, then click the 'Close Header and Footer' button on the Ribbon.
15. Click the 'Page Layout' tab on the Ribbon, then click the 'Watermark' button in the group marked Page Background. On the drop-down menu, choose 'Custom Watermark,' which will bring up the Printed Watermark dialog box.
16. Click the circle next to the option 'Picture watermark,' then click 'Select picture.' On the 'Insert Picture' menu that pops up, choose the picture of a solid color on your computer, then click 'Insert.'
17. Click the drop-down menu next to the word 'Scale,' and select '100%.'
18. Click the box next to the word 'Washout' to unselect the option, unless you want the picture of a color to appear in a much lighter shade.
19. Click 'OK' at the bottom of the Printed Watermark dialog box.
