How to to Compare the Differences in Word Document Tools


Compare Word Documents Side by Side
1. Open both of the Word documents that you want to compare.
2. Go to the 'Window' menu in Word 2003 in either document and select 'Compare Side by Side with.' Go to the 'View' tab in Word 2007 or 2010 and select 'View Side by Side' in the 'Window' group.
3. Click the 'Synchronous Scrolling' button on the 'Compare Side by Side' toolbar in Word 2003 or the 'Window' group of the 'View' tab in Word 2007 or 2010, if it is not already selected.
4. Scroll through both versions of the document simultaneously by moving the scroll bar in either document.
5. Select 'Close Side by Side' on the 'Compare Side by Side' toolbar in Word 2003 when you are finished comparing versions. Click the 'View Side by Side' button in the 'Window' group in Word 2007 or 2010 to stop comparing the two versions.

6. Open one of the two Word documents you want to compare and merge.
7. Go to the 'Tools' menu in Word 2003 and select 'Compare and Merge Documents.' Go to the 'Review' tab in Word 2007 or 2010. Click 'Compare' and then click 'Combine.'
8. Locate and select the second Word document that you want to compare and merge with the first.
9. Click the drop-down arrow next to 'Merge' in Word 2003. Select 'Merge into New Document' to open the merged documents as a different document. In Word 2007 or 2010, click 'OK' on the 'Compare Documents' dialog box to merge the two documents into a new one.
10. Compare the differences. The merged document will be marked with colored underlines and annotations. Accept or reject the insertion and changes and save the new, merged document if desired.
