How to Update Windows Word

1. Close all of the open programs on your computer. If you have any unnecessary programs running in the background of your system, right-click the icon for each program in the task bar and choose 'Exit' to close the program.
2. Go to the computer's Control Panel. To open the Control Panel, click the 'Start' orb or button and click on 'Control Panel' in the menu.
3. Open the Windows Update feature. On a Vista or Windows 7 system, go to 'System and Maintenance>Windows Update.'On Windows XP, go to 'Performance and Maintenance>System>Automatic Updates.'
4. Select the 'Download and Install updates from Microsoft Update when available' option in the 'Windows Updates' screen. In the window that pops up, select how frequently you would like your computer to check for updates and click 'OK.'From the point that the update parameters are set up, your Windows systems checks for updates from the Internet at the set interval and installs any updates for Windows programs, including Microsoft Office Word, automatically.
5. Check for updates at any time between the regularly planned updates using the Windows Update option in the 'Start' menu. To check for updates, go to 'Start>All Programs>Windows Update.' Windows immediately checks for any available updates and installs them.

6. Launch Microsoft Word on your computer. To launch Word, go to the 'Start' menu, 'All Programs,' 'Microsoft Office,' 'Microsoft Office Word.'
7. Use the 'Office Button' that appears in the upper left corner of the Word document window to open the Office menu. Press the 'Word Options' button to open the 'Word Options' dialog box.
8. Click the 'Resources' link in the left-hand pane of the 'Word Options' window. Then, click the 'Check for Updates' button that appears in the right-hand pane to be taken to the Microsoft Updates website. Any available updates for Microsoft Office Word appear on the Microsoft Updates page. Follow the directions on the website to install the updates to your computer.
