How to Count Words and Characters in Word 2007

1. Open Microsoft Word using the Desktop shortcut or the "Start" menu. Open the Word document file that contains the words and characters you wish to count.
2. Highlight the text you want to count by clicking and dragging over it with the left mouse button pressed down. Locate the "Words:" field in the Status bar at the bottom of the Word window. The first number shows the number of words in the paragraph or sentence that you highlighted. The second one is the total number of words in the document.
3. Click on the "Words:" field to open more detailed information. A small window opens showing detailed statistics for the selection, including a character count. The window stays open so you may select other sections of text to count.
