How to Create a Concept Map in MS Word 2007

1. Click on the 'Insert' tab and select the 'SmartArt' icon.
2. Select 'Relationship' to bring up a list of concept maps, such as 'Radial List,' 'Circle Relationship' or 'Hexagon Cluster.'
3. Type your text into the shape or text box provided. Click on an individual shape to expand and reposition shapes. A transform box will appear around the shape. Select 'Add Shape' from the toolbar if you need to add items to the concept map.

4. Click on 'Insert' in the main toolbar, then 'Shapes' to insert a square, oval or other shape to begin your concept map. A target will appear on the screen that will allow you to position and enlarge your shape. Select one of the options in the 'Drawing Tools' tab to change the style, color or shading of your shape. For example, you can select 'Shape Fill' to change the interior of your shape, or select 'Shape Effects' to create a drop shadow.
5. Click on the 'Draw Text Box' icon to insert a word or phrase into your shape.
6. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 to add more shapes to your concept.
7. Click on 'Insert,' then 'Shapes,' and finally, to one of the 'Lines' to connect your shapes with lines.
