How to Automatically Number Multiple Table Columns Vertically in Microsoft Word
Automatically Number Columns
1. Click on the top cell in the column that you want to mark as column 1. Holding down the mouse button, drag the cursor to the top cell in the last column that you want to display a number; then release. This will highlight all the top cells that you want Word to automatically number.
2. Click the 'Home' tab on the Ribbon.
3. Click the 'Numbering' icon, in the paragraph group. This icon displays three horizontal lines and the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Word will automatically number all the highlighted table columns.

4. Click on the left-most cell in the row that you want to mark as row 1. Holding down the mouse button, drag the cursor to the left-most cell in the last row that you want to display a number; then release. This will highlight all the left-hand cells that you want Word to automatically number.
5. Click the 'Home' tab on the Ribbon.
6. Click the 'Numbering' icon, in the paragraph group. This icon displays three horizontal lines and the numbers 1, 2 and 3. Word will automatically number all the highlighted table rows.
