How to Edit WMF Files in Word
Determine Whether the Clip is a WMF
1. Word clip art is available in various formats; WMFs can be edited within Word. To determine whether your clip can be altered, hover over it and look for one of the three-letter format extensions. If you don't see one, right click on the clip and choose Properties; a description will pop up that says 'Type' followed by the file type. Locate a WMF and insert it into Word. (Note that on Mac, the PICT format is used, which Word cannot edit.)
2. In Office 2003 or prior, double click on the file. It will warn you that you're converting the artwork into a drawing object; click 'Yes.' In 2007, right click on the image and choose 'Edit | Picture.' In 2010, right click on the image and choose 'Group | Ungroup.' It will warn you about converting the artwork; click 'Yes.' The image now consists of many smaller images in different colors; you may edit each separately.
3. It may be necessary to zoom in very close to edit, as some pieces may be very small; grab the slider bar at the lower right of the page and slide to the right to increase the zoom. To delete a piece, simply click on it and press the Delete key on the keyboard. (You can always hit Ctrl-Z to undo edits.) To alter its colors, right click on a piece and choose 'Format Autoshape', then change the 'Fill,' 'Line Color,' and 'Line Style' settings. To change the shape, right click and choose 'Edit Points'; this makes many black dots appear (wherever the item's shape curves or changes), and any of them may be moved anywhere.
