How to Make a Document 'Read Only' in Microsoft Word 2007


Save as Read Only
1. Open the document in Microsoft Word 2007.
2. Select the Office Button and choose "Save As."
3. Click the "Options" button at the bottom, left corner of the "Save As" dialog box. Then select "General Options."
4. Enter a password into the "Password to modify" text box. Then checkmark "Read-only recommended" and click "OK." Confirm the password to modify the document and click "OK."
5. Enter a file name and click "Save."
Read Only With Restrict Formatting and Editing
6. Open the document in Microsoft Word 2007.
7. Select the "Review" tab from the ribbon. Then click "Protect Document" and "Restrict Formatting and Editing" from the "Protect" group.
8. Go to the "Restrict Formatting and Editing" task pane.
9. Make a check mark by "Limit Formatting to a selection of styles."
10. Make a check mark by "Editing restrictions" under the second section, then select "No changes (Read only)" from the drop-down menu.
11. Click the "Yes, Start Enforcing Protection" button to open the "Start Enforcing Protection" dialog box.
12. Type and reenter a password under the "Password" section. To create the read-only file without password protection, leave the password text fields blank. Then click "OK."
13. Click the "Save" button in the Quick Access Toolbar to preserve the read-only settings.
