The Microsoft Word Product Key Won't Work

1. Check the original packaging of your Microsoft Office suite software to see if it states the limit to the number of computers you can install the suite on. Depending on the version, you may already have reached the maximum number of installs. For instance, Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010 only allows for installation on three PCs. If you have reached this limit and attempt a fourth install, your product key will not work.
2. Retype the product key into the requested area. The product key is a very long string of letters and number combined, and it is easy to incorrectly type a character or two. Often, the number 8 is confused with a capital B, or a zero is confused with a capital O.
3. Type the product key from the current version of Microsoft Office. Older versions of product keys will not work with the newer version of Microsoft Office. You must obtain a new product key with each Office release.
4. Run the Product Activation Wizard to attempt automated product activation. To run the wizard in Windows 7, click 'Start' and right-click 'Computer.' Select 'Properties,' then click 'Activate Windows now.' The wizard will display. Follow the steps in the wizard to attempt automated phone system activation.
5. Contact Microsoft Office support for help with your product key when you've attempted solutions but still cannot get the product key to work. Microsoft support is available by online chat, phone and email. Have Word open and the Office installation information handy.
