How to Recover a Saved Word File After Saving Over It


Using AutoRecover
1. Click the 'File' menu item in the top-left corner.
2. Hover over the 'Recent' menu item to expand the list.
3. Click 'Recover Unsaved Documents' to search for older versions of the file.
4. Click to select the file you want to recover, then click the 'Recover' button to save the old version. The file will be marked '[Recovered]' in the dialog.
Search for Temporary Files
5. Click the 'Start' menu button.
6. Type '*.asd' or '*.tmp' (without quotes) in the search box and press the 'Enter' key.
7. Scroll through the search results and attempt to find the original file's backup or temporary copy. This will be identified by the '.asd' or '.tmp' file extensions.
8. Double-click the file to open the document in Microsoft Word. Click the 'File' menu item, then 'Save As.' Enter a new name for the new file, then click the 'Save' button to recover the file.
