How to Create Printer Spreads in Microsoft Word
1. Open Microsoft Word by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's Desktop (this applies to both Windows and Mac platforms).
2. Click 'File,' 'Page Setup,' and click on the 'Margins' tab.
3. Click on the 'Down' arrow on the box next to the wording 'Multiple pages:.' Select 'Book fold.' Your new document will automatically set to the landscape orientation.
4. Select the margin space you want within the 'Top:,' 'Bottom:,' 'Inside:' and 'Outside:' margin-setting boxes.
5. Select the gutter space--the space along the fold of your publication--within the 'Gutter' box. Select the gutter position within the 'Gutter position:' box 'Inside' or 'Outside.'
6. Select the number of pages for your publication within the 'Sheets per booklet' box. The number of pages should be divisible by four so the printer spreads will print correctly--a 12-page publication, 16-page publication or other divisible by four-page count.
7. Click 'OK' to close the 'Page Setup' dialog box.
8. Create your publication on the new document layout using text, graphics and other elements.
9. Click 'File,' 'Print' and 'OK' to print your publication. Word will automatically create the printer spreads and output the pages in the correct order.
