How to Change the Footnote Continuation Separator in Word

1. Start Microsoft Word 2007 and open a document that contains a footnote continuation separator that you would like to change.
2. Click the 'Draft View' button at the bottom right of the Word 2007 screen so the document is in draft view. This way you can view the footnote continuation notice.
3. Select the 'References' tab from the top of the Word screen to display the References ribbon. Click 'Show Notes' at the bottom of the 'Footnotes' section of the References ribbon. The footnotes will display at the bottom of the page. If you receive a dialog box called 'View Footnotes,' choose the 'View Footnote Area' option and click 'OK' to close the dialog box.
4. Click the 'Footnotes' drop-down list at the top of the Footnotes Window and choose 'Footnote Continuation Separator' from the list of options. The symbol that is being used as the current footnote continuation separator will appear in the 'Footnotes' window.
5. Use your keyboard to delete or change the footnote continuation separator to the new separator you want to use.
6. Choose the 'Close' button from the 'Footnotes' window to close the window and return to your main document.
