How to Use French Accents in Microsoft Word


1. Type your word and stop when you get to the place for the accented letter. Follow the steps for the type of accent you need to use.
2. Hold down the 'Ctrl' key on your keyboard at the same time you press the apostrophe key ''.' Release both keys and then press 'e,' which is the letter used with the acute accent in French.
3. Press the 'Ctrl' key and the accent grave key '`' (found at the top-left corner of your keyboard, to the left of the number '1'). Release the keys and press 'a,' 'e' or 'u,' which are used with the grave accent in the French language.
4. Press the 'Ctrl' key, the 'Shift' key and the caret key '^' (found on the number '6' at the top of your keyboard) all at the same time. Release the keys and press 'a,' 'e,' 'i,' 'o' or 'u,' which are used with the accent circumflex.
5. Hold down the 'Ctrl' key, the 'Shift' key and the colon key ':' at the same time and then release the keys. Press the needed letter for the umlaut: 'e,' 'i' or 'u.'
6. Press 'Ctrl' and the comma key ',' at the same time and then release. Key a 'c,' which is used with the cedilla.
