How to Recover a File That Was Closed Before Saving in Word 2007


From Document Recovery Task Pane (Ref. 1, 3)
1. Open Microsoft Word 2007.
2. Look to the left of your screen for the Document Recovery task pane. Word will automatically search for an AutoRecover file (saved with an .ASD file extension). If it finds one, the file will appear here.
3. Double-click the file in the task pane to open it. According to the Microsoft Support website, the file will either be listed as 'DocumentName [Original]' or 'DocumentName [Recovered].'
4. Click the 'Microsoft Office' button. Select 'Save as.'
5. Select '.docx' as the file type to re-save the file as a Word 2007 document.
Manually
6. Click the 'Start' button in Windows.
7. Enter '*.ASD' in the 'Search' bar. This will search for all files with the file extension .ASD. If you find the file you're looking for, double-click it to open it in Word 2007.
8. Click the 'Microsoft Office' button and choose 'Save as' to save over the file as a Word document.
From a Backup Copy
9. Open Microsoft Word 2007.
10. Click the 'Microsoft Office' button. Select 'Open.'
11. Select 'All Files' from the drop-down list of file types.
12. Open the folder where your document is stored. Locate the backup copy. The name of the file is 'Backup of [document name]' and the file type will say Microsoft Word Backup Document.'
13. Double-click the backup file. The file will open. Click the 'Microsoft Office' button and 'Save as' to re-save the file.
