How to Make a Book Format in Microsoft Word
Using a Template
1. Open Microsoft Word and select 'New' on the 'File' tab.
2. Browse book templates available in your Word program or download one from Microsoft.com.
3. Apply the template to your document. If downloading it from the Internet, you may have to save it to your hard drive first.
4. Print the book when you are ready and feed the pages manually, if necessary. If the printer automatically prints on the front and back you do not need to make any adjustments. If it does not automatically print on both sides you will need to print one page at a time, flip them over and re-insert them into the printer. A good template will include instructions about how to do this.
Custom Book Format
5. Access the 'Page Layout' tab on the toolbar and look for the 'Page Setup' group to adjust key features in a booklet.
6. Change the orientation by clicking 'Orientation' and selecting 'Portrait' or 'Landscape.' Most booklets use 'landscape' orientation.
7. Adjust the margins by clicking on the 'Margins' button. Select 'Mirrored' to have pages face each other. Select 'Custom Margins' if you want to adjust the space between the text and the edge of the page. The 'Gutter' margin is the space in the middle of a page if it is split in half.
8. Click the 'Columns' button and select 'Two' if you want to fold your pages in half.
9. Print the booklet when ready. If you are using the 'Mirrored' margin setting and your printer automatically prints on two sides, you should not have to make any special adjustments. If your printer does not print on both sides, you will need to print one page at a time, flipping them over and re-inserting them in the printer.
