How to Restrict Certain Areas on a Word Document

1. Open the MS Word Program. Click the 'Microsoft Office' button from the main menu, and then click on 'Word Options'.
2. Click on 'Popular' and then click the 'Show Developer tab in the Ribbon' check box. Finally click 'OK' to apply your changes.
3. Open an existing template or document, or create a new document to begin making your form.
4. Insert your form fields. From the 'Developer' tab under the 'Controls' group, select 'Legacy Tools'. Select the type of form field you wish to enter from the available options. You may add a 'Text Form Field', a 'Check Box Form Field' or a 'Drop-Down List'.
5. Set or change the properties for your content. Place your cursor over the content or form field and right-click. A window will appear with a menu. Click on 'Properties' from the menu options to make any desired changes to your content. For example, you can add the labels to create your 'Drop-Down List', or you can set default text for your 'Text Form Field'.
6. Click on the 'Protect' group from the 'Developer' tab, and then select 'Protect Document'. From the 'Protect Document' task pane click on 'Restrict Formatting and Editing'. Under 'Editing restrictions', click on the 'Allow only this type of editing in the document' check box. Next select 'Filling in forms' form the list of editing restrictions options.
7. Click 'Start enforcement', and then click 'Yes, Start Enforcing Protection' to apply protection to your form fields.
8. Assign a password to the document by typing a password in the 'Enter new password (optional)' box, and then confirm the password by re-typing it. After you have restricted your document and applied your password click on 'OK' to apply all changes.
9. Review your document to make sure the form is set up correctly. Check each field to make sure each one works properly. Save your form for future use. Remember, with password protection only you can edit the default form field controls. All other users will only be allowed to enter text or make changes in the form field areas you created that are fill-able.
