How to Add Line Numbers in Microsoft Word

1. Open Microsoft Word and open an existing document that contains text. You could also start a new file and type a few lines of text so you can see how the line number function works.
2. Choose the 'File' menu and then select 'Page Setup.' This will bring up the 'Page Setup' dialog box.
3. Click the 'Layout' tab on the 'Page Setup' dialog box.
4. Use the drop-down menu under 'Apply to' under the 'Preview' section of the dialog box to select 'Whole document,' 'Selected text' or 'This point forward.' To see the 'Selected text' option you must have text selected at the time.
5. Click the 'Line Numbers' button, which will bring up the 'Line Numbers' dialog box.
6. Select 'Add line numbering' by clicking in the square to add a checkmark.
7. Make your selections for the 'Start at,' 'From text' and 'Count by' options and the 'Numbering' option where you can choose to restart your numbering at each page, at each section or make it continuous.
