How to Make Flow Charts in Word
1. Open or create a new document in Word 2007. Click the 'Insert' tab and the 'SmartArt' button, located in the 'Illustrations' group.
2. Choose a SmartArt item from the resulting dialog box--the 'Hierarchy' and 'Process' groups are good places to start. Click once on any item to bring up a preview and brief description in the right-hand pane. Click 'OK' when you settle on the SmartArt item you want to insert into the document.
3. Click on the SmartArt element to select it, then click the 'SmartArt Tools/Design' tab. Choose a color scheme, if you want, using the 'Change Color' button.
4. Use the 'Add Shape' button at the left of the 'SmartArt Tools/Design' tab to add elements. Before adding a shape, click to select the existing shape in the SmartArt element, then choose where to add a new shape relative to the selected shape (for example, above or to the right). Repeat as necessary until you have all the shapes you need, and they're approximately where you need them.
5. Right-click on any shape to change the shape's properties, including color, text and the shape of the object (for example, change a square to a circle or triangle). Click on any shape and press 'Delete' to get rid of it and its associations with other shapes.
6. Click and drag shapes around in the SmartArt box to reposition them to the precise locations you want; their connectors will move along with them.
7. Change objects' prominence in the hierarchy by selecting them and pressing the 'Promote' and 'Demote' buttons in the 'SmartArt Tools/Design' tab.
