How to Set a Hanging Indent
Microsoft Word
1. Open Microsoft Word by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's desktop or by clicking 'Start,' 'All Programs,' 'Microsoft Word.'
2. Click 'File,' 'Open.' Navigate to the document you want to set the hanging indent in. Double click on the file's name to open the file.
3. Click the 'View Ruler' button, at the top of the vertical scroll bar, to turn on the horizontal ruler. If using an older version of Word, click 'View,' 'Ruler' to turn on the horizontal ruler.
4. Use your computer's mouse to highlight all but the first line of the paragraph you want to add the hanging indent to.
5. Drag the tab symbol on the horizontal ruler under the main toolbar to the position you want the hanging indent.
OpenOffice Writer
6. Open OpenOffice Writer by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's desktop or by clicking 'Start,' 'All Programs,' 'OpenOffice,' 'OpenOffice Writer.'
7. Click 'File,' 'Open.' Navigate to the document you want to set the hanging indent in. Double click on the file's name to open the file.
8. Click 'Format,' 'Styles and Formatting.' The Styles and Formatting dialog box will open.
9. Place your cursor before the second line of the paragraph you want to set the hanging indent in.
10. Double-click the 'Hanging indent' entry in the Styles and Formatting dialog box. The default setting for the hanging indent in OpenOffice Writer is .19 inches.To change the hanging indent setting, right-click the 'Hanging Indent' entry. Click on the 'Indents & Spacing' tab. Change the value in the 'Indent First line' field to the value you want. Click 'OK.'
WordPerfect
11. Open WordPerfect by clicking on the program's icon on your computer's desktop or by clicking 'Start,' 'All Programs,' 'WordPerfect.'
12. Click 'File,' 'Open.' Navigate to the document you want to set the hanging indent in. Double click on the file's name to open the file.
13. Use your computer's mouse to highlight all but the first line of the paragraph you want to add the hanging indent to.
14. Press the 'CTRL' and 'F7' keys together on your computer's keyboard to set the hanging indent by one tab stop. Press the keys together again to advance the handing indent by another tab stop.
