How to Type Portuguese Fonts in MS Word


1. Open Microsoft Word. Click the 'Insert' menu tab then click 'Symbol.' The 'Symbols' box will appear. Change the 'Subset' box from the dropdown menu to '860 MS-DOS Portuguese.' This will show only the characters related to the Portuguese language. Click the character/symbol to be inserted and click 'OK.' The symbol will now appear in the Word document.
2. Use a keyboard shortcut. Microsoft Word comes standard with keyboard shortcuts for characters of some foreign languages. By pressing and holding 'ALT' on the keyboard, then entering a four digit number different characters will appear when the 'ALT' button is let go. According to the Dawn Ontario website, these shortcuts will make the following Portuguese characters appear:'ALT + 0227 = ãALT + 0195 = ÃALT + 0231 = çALT + 0199 = Ç'
3. Change the keyboard to a Portuguese keyboard. Click 'Start Menu,' 'Control Panel,' then 'Regional and Language Options.' Click 'Keyboards and Languages.' Click 'Change Keyboards.' Click 'Add,' select 'Portuguese' and click 'OK.' The keyboard has now been set to Portuguese and fonts and characters will be available.
