1. Open Microsoft Word. Click 'File' or 'Microsoft Office.'
2. Choose 'Open' from the menu.
3. Locate your file. Click 'Open.'

4. Go to the Microsoft Download Center website.
5. Type 'Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats' into the 'Search' box.
6. Click the link and press the 'Download' button. Click 'Run' to download the software. Confirm installation if prompted for permission.
7. Accept the Microsoft Terms of Service by checking the box. Click 'Continue.' Click 'OK.'
8. Open Microsoft Word. Click 'File' on the top menu. Choose 'Open.' Locate your file. Click 'Open.'
