How to Design a Book Jacket in Word

1. Open Microsoft Word. Click the 'Page Layout' tab at the top of the work area. Click the 'Orientation' button under the tab and select 'Landscape.'
2. Re-size the page as needed by clicking the 'Size' button on the 'Page Layout' tab. Click 'More Paper Sizes' and type directly into the 'Width' and 'Height' boxes. Click 'OK,' and Word re-sizes the page.
3. Click the 'Insert' tab. Click the 'Text Box' button and select 'Simple Text Box.' When the text box appears on the Word document, drag it onto the right side of the page to form the book's cover. Leave about one and a half inches of space between the text box's edge and the edge of the page to form the flap after printing. Type into the text box with the title of the book and author name. Optional: Add another text box, drag it onto the flap area and type the book's description.
4. Click the 'Insert' tab. To add a custom image for the book jacket cover, click the 'Picture' button. Browse to the image and double-click it, then position it on the right side of the page. Otherwise, click the 'Clip Art' button, search for something related to the book and click 'Go.' Scroll through the results and double-click a picture for the book jacket.
5. Add another text box and drag it onto the bottom-left side to form the back cover. Leave about one and a half inches of space between the text box's edge and the edge of the page to form the flap after printing. Type 'About the Author,' then type some biographical information. Add another picture of a headshot or image of the book author. Optional: Add another text box. Drag it onto the flap area; type the author's information, details about other published works or the printing company.
6. Add another text box and position it on the main portion of the left side of the page. Type the description of the book, along with any blurbs or quotes about the book from other sources.
7. Add one more text box for the book jacket's spine. Click the green dot in the top center of the text box and twirl the box 90 degrees. Stretch the box, so it runs down the length of the page; position it in the middle of the page. Click into the text box; type the book's name and the author's name.
8. Give the book jacket a background color by clicking the 'Page Layout' tab. Click the 'Page Color' button. Click a small colored square for the background color.
9. Click the 'File' tab. Click 'Save As.' Type a name for the book jacket file and click the 'Save' button.
